How to Find the Right HTS Code for Amazon FBA
By HTS Explorer Trade Experts • 5 min read
Importing goods for Amazon FBA without the correct Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code is a recipe for disaster. Misclassification can lead to unexpected tax bills, seized inventory, and account suspensions.
Why Amazon FBA Sellers Need Accurate HTS Codes
When your goods arrive at a US port, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) assesses import duties based on the 10-digit HTS code you (or your freight forwarder) declare. If you import electronics from Shenzhen and use a generic "plastic goods" code to get a lower rate, CBP can audit the shipment, penalize you, and flag your company for future imports.
The 3-Step Process to Find Your Code
1. Identify the Material and Function
HTS codes are highly specific. An "office chair" has a different code depending on whether it's made of wood, metal, or plastic. You need to know exactly what your product is made of.
2. Use HTS Explorer's Search
Start with a broad search. If you're selling "stainless steel water bottles", type "stainless steel bottle" into our search bar. You'll likely land in Chapter 73 (Articles of iron or steel).
3. Check Section 301 Exclusions (The China Tariffs)
Most FBA sellers source from China. Currently, thousands of HTS codes carry an additional 7.5% to 25% duty under Section 301. When you view a code on HTS Explorer, check the "Trade Remedy Alerts" box to see if your product is impacted.
Pro Tip for FBA Sellers:
Never blindly trust your supplier's HS code. Chinese factories use the 8-digit Chinese HS code. While the first 6 digits are harmonized globally, the last 4 digits (which determine US duty rates) are unique to the United States. Always map the 6-digit code to the US 10-digit equivalent.
